Oscar-nominated Hollywood actor George Segal passes away at 87

George Segal, the Oscar-nominated Hollywood actor passed away on Tuesday, March 23 in Santa Rosa, California. He was 87-years-old and died due to complications from bypass surgery. His wife, Sonia Segal confirmed the news of his death. Segal was known for his roles in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, The Goldbergs and others.

Sonia issued a statement regarding Segal’s death that read, “The family is devastated to announce that this morning George Segal passed away due to complications from bypass surgery.” Segal hailed from Great Neck, New York and had received and Academy Awards nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Nick in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1966. The film had Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton in the lead.

Segal had been active recently for the past eight years with the ABC’s comedy series The Goldbergs that was set in the 1980’s. He filmed Episode 16 of the series before his death in the show’s current eighth season. The episode is set to air on April 7. The series is also expected to pay a tribute to the veteran actor. He also worked in TV sitcom Just Shoot Me! which earned him two Golden Globe nominations.

Segal’s expansive filmography includes King Rat, The Terminal Man, The Black Bird, Fun with Dick and Jane, Russian Roulette, Who Is Killing the Great Chefs of Europe?, All’s Fair, Time of Darkness and others.
