Vocal for Local: Kanai becomes the FIRST Indian beauty brand to be a part of Oscars 2021’s goodie bag!


Apart from The White Tiger, this year’s Oscars 2021 has brought another Indian curation to the global platform. Wonder what makes us say so? Mumbai-based skincare and makeup brand, Kanai, has found its place in Oscar’s goodie bag! That’s right, this homegrown beauty and skincare brand scored a place in The Academy Awards’ “Everyone Wins” nominee gift bags, that are given to all the A-listers who are nominated in the Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Director categories.

In a conversation with a leading magazine, founder Aditi M Gaur stated that she wanted to bring the country to the global stage. “When I founded Kanai, I wanted to bring ‘Made in India’ to the global stage. We were doing this long before the ‘Vocal for Local’ movement began, and today we have succeeded in accomplishing that goal. Kanai is my way of bringing indigenous products inspired by the wisdom of our ancestors to the world," she said.

The Oscar goodie bags feature Kanai’s Turmeric & Apricot Face Mask, a product that is handmade by women in the Himalayas. “The ingredients are turmeric, apricot seeds, rose petals and tulsi in a dry powder, which cleanse and nourish the skin,” she continued.

While these goodie bags are not directly associated with the Oscars, they have been part of the tradition for more than 2 decades. In the era of being Vocal for Local, having an Indian product find a global platform is a big achievement in itself. While the world is already onto it, it’s time for us as well to switch to local homegrown brands that might just make their way to another global platform.
