COVID-19 Effect: Gucci’s ‘season-less’ calendar to Saint Laurent opting out of PFW, high-end labels fall in sync with fashion’s slow-paced scenario

After several months of lockdown and self-imposed isolation, courtesy COVID-19 pandemic, designers had the time to stop and revaluate the fast-paced norms of the fashion industry. Many international houses as well as ace designers wrote an open letter reset the functionality while renowned fashion bodies- Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) the British Fashion Council (BFC) issued joint statements calling for some major changes in the fashion industry.

But, it looks like the changes of breaking the rigid, treadmill paced fashion calendar are coming from within. A few days ago, Gucci made a major announcement of going ‘season-less’ and showcasing its collection twice a year. “Two appointments a year are more than enough to give time to form a creative thought and to give more time to this system,” Gucci's creative director, Alessandro Michelle said in a video conference. He also hopes that this new fashion calendar would be incorporated with cooperation from other designers.

This major decision fell in line with the pivotal events like Dries Van Noten’s petition for a sensible and sustainable fashion calendar, Giorgio Armani asking to realign collections with seasons in the store and Saint Laurent opting out of Paris Fashion Week. In its statement last month, Saint Laurent mentioned that it would take control of the fashion schedule and would be conscious of the current global scenario.

Armani too, plans on keeping its summer collection until the month of September. "It makes no sense for one of my jackets or suits to live in the shop for three weeks before becoming obsolete, replaced by new goods that are not too different,” he said in a statement.

It looks like together the fashion world can and will. What are your thoughts on this?
