It’s all about sustainable fashion on the Day 2 of Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2020!

Since 2012, Lakmé Fashion Week has spearheaded conversations on preserving and promoting Indian handlooms and textiles, championing sustainable fashion as the fashion of the future. Every season, the platform takes pride in reviving indigenous crafts and bringing artisans to the fore through strong and powerful initiatives and programmes.

THE SHOWCASES SCHEDULED ON DAY TWO AT LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK ARE:

CIRCULAR DESIGN CHALLENGE 2020 IN COLLABORATION WITH UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME, RELIANCE R|ELANTM ‘FASHION FOR EARTH’ & LAKMÉ FASHION WEEK

The second edition of India’s largest sustainable fashion award, Circular Design Challenge (CDC) is a platform for young fashion/accessory entrepreneurs to showcase their innovative ideas and collections made by using materials from diverse sources of waste including plastic to promote circularity. CDC has received over 400 registrations from 40 different cities of India, from which 5 finalists have been shortlisted. All 5 finalists will make their pitch presentations and showcase products made using circular design principles to a jury of leading industry experts. The winner will be announced by the jury at the end of the session and win a cash prize of INR 20 lacs along with other benefits. Also, during the session, PETA India will be presenting a special award for ‘Best Innovation in Vegan Fashion’ to an enterprise discovered during CDC 2020.

BUNA | JAYATI GOENKA | MEDIUM | SADHNA - WOMEN’S HANDICRAFT ENTERPRISE

A special showcase with three young designer labels and one women-led social enterprise. The designer labels have been working with craft & handloom clusters like Jamdani weaving from 7 villages of West Bengal, Chanderi weavers from MP and Block Printing clusters in Bagru to name a few.  While Sadhna – Women’s Handicraft Enterprise, is led and managed by a family of 714 women spread over 16 locations in and around Udaipur city, making Craftmark certified products.

ASHDEEN | HOUSE OF THREE X TANTAJO BY RAJIB DEBNATH

Ashdeen Z. Lilaowala is a textile designer specializing in Parsi Gara embroidery, a craft he has researched extensively and has done much to revive with local artisans. With a team of 150 craftsmen, the label creates inimitable pieces from their studio based in New Delhi.

House of Three, a Bangalore based high fashion label offers a curated mix of Couture, Pret, Diffusion, is collaborating with Tantajo, a brand by master weaver Rajib Debnath from Bengal, who supports the livelihood of 450 families of master weavers, dyers and spinners. They are presenting a collection blending the Cotton Muslin Jamdani of Bengal with Silk Kanjivarams from master weavers in Kanchipur & Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu.

VEGAN FASHION CAMPAIGN LAUNCH BY PETA INDIA

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an American animal rights organization that operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment or abuse in any other way. PETA India is coming together with LFW to launch an exclusive print campaign with Bollywood actress Sunny Leone to promote vegan fashion.

CRAFTED IN CROCHET BY SHADES OF INDIA

Founded two decades ago, Shades of India combines contemporary design with the inspiring workmanship of traditional craft. The Spring-Summer 2020 collection highlights delicate crochet lace made in Saharanpur, embellished with shimmering zari threads and the dewy glistening of mukaish – the traditional craft from Lucknow. This show will witness women with an inspiring body of work across industries, walk the ramp.

TACKLING MULTI-LAYER PACKAGING' WASTE – A CIRCULAR SOLUTION IN COLLABORATION WITH AFROZ SHAH FOUNDATION & IMG RELIANCE

Multi-layered packaging (MLP) comprises a thin foil of aluminium, that is sandwiched, or laminated in a matrix of paper and/or plastic layers, which makes it difficult for recycling. Lakmé Fashion Week (IMG Reliance) in collaboration with Afroz Shah (UN Environment's Champion of the Earth, Indian of the year 2017, CNN Hero 2019) are coming together to develop a circular solution for MLP waste through the fashion industry.  The endeavour with this project is to illustrate a creative and circular solution to MLP waste and inspire & enable brands and organizations to consider this as an alternative material to virgin plastics and or traditional materials.

#GLOBALISINGTELANGANAHANDLOOMS BY EKÁ FOR TSCO, GOVERNMENT OF TELANGANA

Eká is reflective of designer Rina Singh’s personal ethos of simple living, connected to her upbringing in a family of agriculturalists. This season, Eká comes together with the Telangana State Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society (TSCO) to showcase a collection to spotlight the handloom clusters from Narayanpet, Mahadevpura & Pochampally. The collaboration presents traditional textiles from Telangana in a new light and enables #GlobalisingTelaganaHandlooms through this showcase.

RITU KUMAR X ECOVEROTM

Fashion design veteran and Padma Shri awardee Ritu Kumar will return to the LFW platform after 5 years in collaboration with Lenzing™ from Austria for a special showcase with sustainable viscose fibre ECOVERO™ as the Day 2 finale show.  The collection is a culmination of four stories – Mrinalini Mukherjee’s exhibit at the MET, Neo Origami, Flora & Fauna, and Sundarvan. This partnership with LENZING™ ECOVERO™ has further built a dialogue on sustainable fashion, thus focusing on Ritu Kumar brand’s ideology on sustainability and ecological harmony, contributing to a cleaner, eco-responsible environment.

Lakmé Fashion Week Summer/Resort 2020 is scheduled to be held between February 12 to 16, 2020.
