2024 First Quarter Box Office Report: Fighter, Madgaon Express to Crew, 10 highest-grossing films worldwide

The first quarter of 2024 has proven eventful and fruitful to quite an extent for the Hindi film industry. From January to March, the audience got a taste of different genres. Whether thriller, supernatural, comedy, slice-of-life or patriotic, movie buffs cherished and loved every flavour. 

Now, as we gear for the second quarter of the year, here's looking at the 10 films that broke the box office in the first three months. From Hrithik Roshan-Deepika Padukone's aerial drama Fighter, Ajay Devgn's supernatural thriller Shaitaan, Shahid Kapoor-Kriti Sanon's Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya to Kunal Kemmu's directorial debut, Madgaon Express, it's been a memorable beginning. 

Merry Christmas

Sriram Raghavan directed Merry Christmas kickstarted the year on a good note. Starring Katrina Kaif and Vijay Sethupathi in the lead, the film is a thriller that explores the events that unfold when two strangers meet on Christmas Eve. Produced by Tips Films and Matchbox Pictures, Merry Christmas collected Rs. 26.02 crores worldwide. (Read Merry Christmas Review)

Fighter

Mounted on a huge scale, Siddharth Anand directed Fighter was the first blockbuster of 2024. Headlined by Anil Kapoor, Hrithik Roshan, Deepika Padukone, Karan Singh Grover and Akshay Oberoi, the aerial drama was produced by Viacom18 Studios and Marflix Pictures. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya

Dinesh Vijan's Maddock Films came up with yet another heartwarming film in February. Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya explored the 'impossible love story' of a human and a robot. Shahid Kapoor played the role of Aaryan, a robotics engineer, whereas Kriti Sanon was SIFRA, a robot. The film's worldwide collection was Rs. 133 crores. (Read TBMAUJ Review)

Article 370

Yami Gautam and Priya Mani's Article 370 didn't just receive critical acclaim but also excelled at the box office. Set in the period of the abrogation of Article 370 in Kashmir, it told a riveting story of two women who played a key role in the historic event in India's glorious chapters. Produced by B62 Studios and Jio Studios, the film's worldwide collection is Rs. 108.96 crores. (Read Article 370 Review)

Laapataa Ladies

Kiran Rao's directorial comeback, Laapataa Ladies, was produced by Jio Studios and Aamir Khan Productions. Despite having a niche market and new actors like Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta and Sparsh Shrivastava, the slice-of-life film revolving around the unconventional case of a missing bride, became one of the top 10 grossing projects of the first quarter. Shaitaan

Ajay Devgn, R Madhavan, Jyotika and Janki Bodiwala presented a supernatural thriller revolving around the ancient practice of black magic in Jio Studios, Devgn Films and Panorama Studios' collaborative venture, Shaitaan. It was the official Hindi remake of the popular Gujarati film, Vash. The Vikas Bahl directorial minted Rs. 194.57 crores at the box office. (Read Shaitaan Review)

Yodha

Backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, Shashank Khaitan's Mentor Disciple Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios, Sidharth Malhotra's Yodha performed well at the box office due to strong word of mouth. Co-starring Disha Patani and Raashii Khanna, the action thriller collected Rs. 22.70 crores. 

Madgaon Express

Kunal Kemmu struck the jackpot with his directorial debut, Madgaon Express. Led by Divyenndu, Pratik Gandhi, Avinash Tiwary, Chhaya Kadam, Upendra Limaye and Nora Fatehi, the film is an out-and-out clean comedy with phenomenal performances. Bankrolled by Excel Entertainment, Madgaon Express is still running in theatres successfully and has minted approximately Rs. 22.44 crores worldwide. (Read Madgaon Express Review)

Swatantrya Veer Savarkar

Randeep Hooda was a one-man show with Swatantrya Veer Savarkar. He turned director and producer while acting in the titular role. Co-starring Ankita Lokhande, Amit Sial and Mrinal Dutt among others, the film is running in theatres alongside Madgaon Express. The period drama has collected Rs. 19.31 crores. Crew

Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon's Crew is the latest big release in March. Directed by Rajesh A. Krishnan and produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Anil Kapoor Films & Communication Network, the heist comedy is successfully running worldwide.
