Lockdown 2020 Virtual Edit: Mini couture, massive glamour! Fusing film and fashion, Dior exhibits its AW20-21 collection with miniature mannequins

The several months of lockdown have certainly got the creative juices flowing of our favorite fashion labels, and who better than Dior to testify this fact. On Monday, July 6, 2020, the French luxury brand unveiled its AW20-21 collection but not without a glamourous and adorable twist.

In the ongoing digital Paris Fashion Week, Dior launched its Fall 2020 collection designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri virtually instead of presenting it on a runway.

Chuiri’s haute couture collection was inspired by female Surrealist figures such as Dora Maar, Leonora Carrington, and Lee Miller and was presented in the form of a short film directed by Matteo Garrone. "Surrealist images manage to make visible what is in itself invisible," Chiuri said in her statement as per online site Fashionista. "I'm interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exorcising uncertainty about the future," she continued.

The miniature haute couture brought the best of dramatic ensembles that featured extravagant feathers, ruffled tulles, bold colour palette, poetic silhouettes, and ethereal fabrics and draping.

This miniature collection was presented in a trunk that brought out the drama, furthermore. “During the lockdown, I saw many articles about the digital world, but honestly, fashion is not only digital. It’s not something you can only see. You have to touch it, you have to see the craftsmanship, especially in couture,” she explained. “In this way, we can send the collection around the world to our clients.”

The haute couture ateliers made a two set of the displayed 37 outfits, produced at 40% of their original size. These dresses would now travel across the globe for their ‘touch-and-feel’ element. “All the dresses are really couture dresses. We made them in the real proportions with the real textiles, with the real craftsmanship,” Chiuri stated as per WWD. “It’s playful, but it’s real. You have to see yourself in a dress,” she concluded.
