THE LATE '90S

FLAGSHIP IN DELHI

1997: A magical celebration of interior design! This year saw the opening of Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla’s Flagship Store in Delhi at Maharani Bagh. Letting their appetite for aesthetic beauty go wild, they created an extraordinary space which bore all the hallmarks of their design sensibilities. Custom made furniture, masterpieces of art and artefacts and panels from a Lucknow haveli danced together in perfect harmony to create the ultimate, maximalist heaven. A spectacular, four panelled Lotus Pond painting by A. Ramachandran adorned the lobby. The iconic flower is a much cherished motif for Abu and Sandeep and has featured extensively in their collections through the decades. The throne-like chair in the second picture is an ideal depiction of the duo’s majestic design philosophy. Upholstered in beige suede, it is inspired by the grand architecture of Gothic cathedrals and it features the reflective wonder of mirror inlay on wood. #33YearsOfAJSK . . . #abujanisandeepkhosla #abujani #sandeepkhosla #memorylane #journey #memories #milestones #highlights #anniversary #design #fashion #Indian #traditional #gothic #cathedral #mirror #designerduo #furnituredesign #furniture

THE BACHCHAN WEDDING

1997: More from the spectacular wedding of Shweta Bachchan and Nikhil Nanda! "Jaya is like our sister and we are like Shweta's mamas. We've known her and Abhishek since they were in their early teens, so doing this wedding went beyond work for us and it will always hold a very special place in our hearts"Nikhil and his family were very close to us and our first interiors project was redecorating their home. So this wedding meant a lot to us. It was the first event we ever got to design from end to end. We had a great time. It was a fantastic creative and emotional experience!"- Abu & Sandeep The duo channeled their devotion to detail into every aspect of the fabulous arrangements. Both the couture and the decor reflected the magic of their maximalist philosophy. For the wedding ceremony, they created ensembles that were a celebration of regal grace and handcrafted embroideries. Shweta Bachchan wore a velvet ghagra and blouse in maroon. Tiny booties embroidered in resham, badla and crystals filled the lehenga. A French net dupatta with a floral border completed this deliciously romantic ensemble. And for the mother of the bride, Jaya Bachchan, an exquisite red bandhini ghagra sari with lavish floral zardozi embroidery. @shwetabachchan @nikhil_nanda @amitabhbachchan @bachchan #33YearsOfAJSK . . . #abujanisandeepkhosla #abujani #sandeepkhosla #memorylane #journey #memories #milestones #anniversary #traditional #bridal #red #velvet #ghaghra #maroon #blouse #resham #badla #crystals #frenchnet #bandhanighaghra #floral #zardozi #embroidery #jayabachchan #amitabhbachchan #shwetabachchan #abhishekbachchan #nikhilnanda

1998 – When Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla displayed the finesse of their art for the British Council! Titled ‘Enduring Image’, the council’s exhibition included a beauteous retrospective on the duo’s work featuring aesthetic indulgence enveloped in innovative silhouettes, intricate embroideries, fantasy infused inspirations and breakthrough revivals. Zardozi umbrellas and embroidered flags marked the finale of the ‘royal procession’ themed show which included multiple ranges like gold, Tibetan, Killim, Kehkashan and Chikan to complement the diversity of global art forms. "It was only fitting that the ‘Enduring Image’ exhibition be concluded with an extravagant Abu Sandeep Fashion show...as the models glided down the stairwell, the centuries old exhibits on loan from the British Museum stood in mute attendance to a spectacle of impeccable fashion and style." -The Times of India #33YearsOfAJSK . . . #abujanisandeepkhosla #abujani #sandeepkhosla #memorylane #journey #memories #milestones #stylepioneers #anniversary #design #fashion #Indian #traditional #culture #handcrafted #innovation #trendsetters #original #couture #always #classic #handmade #handembroidery

AJSK FOR JAMES BOND

In 1999, their work made it to the sets of a James Bond film! Acclaimed costume designer Lindy Hemming styled Sophie Marceau in Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla for ‘The World is Not Enough’. While passing Beauchamp Place in London, she came across ‘Also’ - the boutique owned by Eileen Coyne that displayed the duo’s couture. Amazed at the intricacy and richness of the garments, she picked up three to style Sophie for the Bond film. Recalling their exuberance, here’s what Abu Sandeep have to say – “We were really excited about our designs being used in a Bond film, but we kept it to ourselves and never spoke about it to anyone. Once the foreign press wrote about it, the Indian press took over. All those clothes are now in the Bond museum in London.” The next photo displays a Balinisean drape that is part of the same collection from which Sophie's scarf was sourced. Fantastically shaded in earthy tones, the fabric's hue flaunted a miraculous movement of colours. @sophiemarceau P.S. Did you know? INTERNATIONAL ACCLAIMATIONS

1999 brought international recognition when Dame Judi Dench received an Oscar wearing Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla! After seeing Sophie Marceau wear the label in The World is Not Enough, Dame Judi enquired about the designers and visited the London boutique that housed their couture and bought several ensembles for herself. The duo then offered to dress her for the Oscars and since then, she has remained a beloved client and friend. Judi graciously showed appreciation for her outfit made for the Oscars with a note and a bottle of champagne. Her Dhaka hand embroidered creation featured roses and tendrils that collectively formed a subtly scintillating trellis. Gold silk resham danced over the fabric with unparalleled intricacy. She says, “Not only are Abu and Sandeep's clothes works of art, but they are exquisite to look at and the most feminine clothes that I have ever worn.” Two decades have gone by, yet this memory remains a vision of outstanding exquisiteness! It was the first time Dame Judi appeared in Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla, and she has remained an aficionado ever since. #33YearsOfAJSK . . . #abujanisandeepkhosla #abujani #sandeepkhosla #journey #memories #milestones #highlights #anniversary #design #fashion #damejudidench #oscars #dhakacreation #handembroidery #roses #tendrils #gold #silkresham #craftsmanship #innovators #handcrafted #couture #fashionpioneers #classic #handmade

THE EARLY '2000s

ALL THE WAY TO OSCARS

2000: The Oscar Awards witnessed not one, but two exquisite ensembles by Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla! Lindy Hemming - the winner for Best Costume Design, was a vision of true finesse in a creation from the duo’s ‘Shikargah’ collection. True to its name, the garment had animals and floral patterns enchanting the coat dress. It was paired with a black stole that had the same patterns delicately glittering in matching sequins. Lindy first sourced the duo’s clothes for the Bond film, The World is not Enough. She states “Their designs are exquisite combinations of beautiful fabrics and embroidery techniques of the east, adding mystery and excitement to both day and evening wear.” Seen next is the outfit that Dame Judi Dench wore when she presented the Oscar to Michael Caine for Best Supporting Actor. The pale lilac garment featured the impossible intricacy of Chikankari twinkling with the soft shine of small, silver sequins. #33YearsOfAJSK . . . #abujanisandeepkhosla #abujani #sandeepkhosla #journey #memories #milestones #highlights #anniversary #design #fashion #Indian #traditional #culture #craftsmanship #oscaraward #lindyhemming #bestcostumedesign #shikargahcollection #animal #floral #pattern #sequins #chikankari #original #couture #classic #handmade #handembroidery #judidench

2002: A goddess in green and gold! Madhuri Dixit Nene is a vision of eternal beauty in this net anarkali crafted in a gold, Zardozi upper that leads to a deep green flair embellished with matching sequins. “We were absolutely delighted when Sanjay Leela Bhansali approached us to dress three prominent characters for Devdas! 2003: Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla received the National Award for Costume Design for their work in Devdas. “Devdas was a labour of love and we worked feverishly, inspired by the beauty of the story. The concept behind the creation was drawn from the 1930’s-40’s. With our imagination and vision for each character, we did research into dress patterns of the time and looked back on old reference pictures, Bengali culture and traditional wear. We were ready with all the costumes barring 2 or 3 before the movie even started and we designed the whole look from clothes to jewellery.”- Abu & Sandeep @abujani @sandeepkhosla #33YearsOfAJSK . . . #abujanisandeepkhosla #abujani #sandeepkhosla #journey #memories #milestones #highlights #anniversary #design #fashion #craftsmanship #nationalaward #devdas #bengaliculture #traditionalwear #handembroidery #classic #couture #handmade #original #costumedesign

2002: A glimpse into the house of the goddess who walked the earth! 2007: Gota, a gift from Rajasthan! Gota is a woven metallic ribbon that is crafted with gold or silver wire thread and silk or cotton thread. It is made in Rajasthan and was formerly used mainly as borders and finishes and also as flowers and dots on many north Indian royal outfits. It has been a constant in Abu Sandeep's work over the years and they have kept reinventing its usage on fabric with much success. Here's Nita Ambani and Isha in Bali Gota for Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla's India Fantastique. Their ensembles have multiple borders on the ghagra and dupatta featuring beautiful floral bael motifs. An Endless Love. Through the decades the duo have excelled at reinventing the use of crystals, stones and beads creating bejewelled dreams in the form of couture. Here's looking back at that brilliance. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan took crystals to Cannes 2013 in an indulgently embroidered Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla ensemble! The Aubusson gown complements her staggering beauty with tiny pastel Swarovski crystals embroidered with resham. Pearls add to the garment's grandeur. The grey outfit seen next has a ruffled skirt paired with a richly encrusted blouse. Big and small Swarovski crystals add depth to its delightful dimension. The next image displays a full-length skirt spectacularly embroidered in stones and pearls that fill a gorgeous, geometric pattern. Worn with a ruffled shirt, it has a tiny, sequined blouse underneath. The golden blouse is another stunning manifestation of bead, stone and sequins infused embroidery. 2014: A FLIGHT OF FANTASY- MAKING TERMINAL 2 A DESIGN DESTINATION. "It began with a phone call one New Year’s Day from Sanjay Reddy, Chairman GVK. He was constructing the new Mumbai Airport and had hired SOM, New York to design the new Terminal. Sanjay and Pinky Reddy have been close friends and have always had great faith in our work. He invited us to collaborate on the project as Design Consultants. His brief was both clear and ambitious. He wanted the Terminal to incorporate state of the art, cutting edge functionality. That was a given. But he wanted more. It must also showcase India at her most Incredible. It must be world class but it had to be firmly rooted in Indian-ness. Abu and I are deeply passionate about and unabashedly proud of India and Sanjay felt we were therefore the perfect people for the task. “ -Sandeep Khosla The duo worked closely with the exceptional team at SOM, Roger Duffy, Peter Lefkovits & Laura Ettelman, who provided ingenious engineering solutions that allowed them to translate the grandest vision into a physical, 3D reality. It was decidedly erotic, grown-up glam for the woman who always stands apart and knows and loves herself.” The duo's favourite muse Shweta Bachchan Nanda took the ramp by storm in a Deco Feather gown radiating utmost opulence in white. VEERE DI WEDDING

2018: Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla take their couture to cinema with Veere De Wedding! Their rapport with Sonam and Rhea took this project beyond work. It was a time of supreme joy, ecstatic creativity and marvelous manifestation. The duo passionately reinvented their classics including Kareena's vintage chikan lehenga which was paired with a delicate pearl-edged, off-shoulder blouse that became an absolute rage after the film's release. Even Sonam's miniature blouse was inspired by the Miniature Collection archives from the 80's that had mythological artworks embedded in the garment. Talking about their fabulous experience, Abu Sandeep reveal that "It wasn't just costume design. We see each woman for her uniqueness and so her wardrobe must express and exude her individuality. Sonam, Kareena, Swara and Shikha and the roles they played in VDW called for us to use our creativity to serve both their physical beauty and their spirits, personalities and lifestyles. It was a delicious challenge. And yet effortless because with a savvy and stylish team of women like them, the inspiration just flowed.” Sharing her experience too, here's what Rhea Kapoor had to say - "Working with Abu and Sandeep was an instinctive choice. Cannot think of a wedding without their ensembles. Putting the wardrobe together was a passionate process. Lots of brainstorming, pushing the envelope and unleashing the imagination." @rheakapoor @sonamkapoor @reallyswara @shikhatalsania @vdwthefilm #33YearsOfAJSK . . . #abujanisandeepkhosla #abujani #sandeepkhosla #journey #memories #milestones #highlights #anniversary #design #fashion #culture #craftsmanship #classic #handmade #handembroidery #veerediwedding #rheakapoor #sonamkapoor #kareenkapoorkhan #swarabhaskar #shikhatalsania #cinema
