Peeping Moon Exclusive : After Kartik Aaryan project gets shelved, Sandeep Modi to direct Rajkummar Rao in Dharma Production

After ‘Mr. & Mrs. Mahi,’ Karan Johar and Rajkummar Rao are exploring another collaboration. PeepingMoon.com has exclusively learned that Rao — whose latest release, ‘Bhool Chuk Maaf,’ is currently running in theatres — is in advanced talks with Dharma Productions for a quirky thriller.

Sandeep Modi, renowned for directing critically acclaimed popular web series such as ‘Aarya’ and ‘The Night Manager,’ will helm this project that sources are describing as a high-concept thriller drama infused with elements of comedy, suspense, and eccentricity. Rao is said to have given his verbal commitment, though formal contracts are yet to be signed. Alongside Rao, the film will feature a robust ensemble star cast, with casting actively underway for other pivotal roles.

This film will mark Modi’s first theatrical Hindi directorial venture, following his debut with the 2019 Marathi slice-of-life film ‘Chumbak’ starring Swanand Kirkire. Modi was previously set to collaborate with Dharma Productions on a period action drama headlined by Kartik Aaryan. However, that project was shelved due to budgetary constraints. Since then, Modi and Karan have been actively exploring new opportunities to work together, leading to this quirky thriller.

Production is slated to begin in October, though the timeline may shift depending on Rao’s availability, as he has multiple prior commitments before he can begin work on a new film. Next, he is set to begin filming his second production venture — a satirical drama addressing the commercialization of India’s education system — alongside Keerthy Suresh. Following this, he will delve into Vikramaditya Motwane’s highly anticipated biopic on the former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly, though the exact shooting timelines of that project are still a work in progress.

On the release front, Rao will next be seen in ‘Bhakshak’ director Pulkit’s upcoming action drama, ‘Maalik,’ scheduled to hit cinemas on July 11. His debut production, ‘Toaster,’ has also wrapped up and is expected to premiere on Netflix later this year.
