PeepingMoon Exclusive: 12th Fail star Vikrant Massey to play a blind musician in a Ruskin Bond tale

Vikrant Massey is losing his sight in his next film. The actor who recently made his breakthrough to the masses with the super success of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail has signed a love story, and we have exclusively learned that he plays a blind musician in the film.

The project is titled “Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan," drawing inspiration from the iconic Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan song from Sanjay Leela Bhansali's classic musical romance, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999). Niranjan Iyengar, who's previously written dialogues for popular movies such as My Name Is Khan, Ra. One, D-Day, Student of the Year, and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, among others, will direct this film, marking his foray into direction following a successful two-decade-long writing career. Mansi Bagla and Varun Bagla of the Mini Films banner produce the movie in partnership with Bhushan Kumar’s T-Series.

Aankhon Ki Gustaakhiyan is said to be based on India's beloved writer Ruskin Bond’s popular short story, The Eyes Have It, originally published in the 1950s in Contemporary Indian English Stories. Niranjan Iyenger himself has written the screen adaptation of this heart-stopping tale, revolving around a blind musician and a theater actress who embark on a transformative journey of love and self-discovery. The film, packed with ironic twists and turns, tackles topics of compassion, willpower, independence, desire, perception, memory, and confidence. While the heroine has not yet been locked, Vikrant plays the role of a romantic and contemplative soul who has lost his vision in this enchanting love story.

The production is scheduled to kick off in August 2024 and will primarily be shot in Uttarakhand and Georgia. Vikrant will head to this project after finishing Rajkumar Hirani’s maiden web series that stars him in the role of a cybercrime expert. The show is currently in production and will stream on Disney+Hotstar early next year. Vikrant is also discussing several big projects following the 12th Fail success, but he hasn't committed to any yet.

On the release front, Vikrant has as many as five movies lined up this year: the offbeat romantic thriller, Phir Aayi Haseen Dillruba with Taapsee Pannu; Aditya Nimbalkar’s Sector 36; Blackout; and an untitled love story with Raashi Khanna. His next release is the investigative thriller, The Sabarmati Report, centered around the 2002 Godhra train burning, set to hit cinemas on May 3, 2024.
