Meghna Gulzar has repeatedly turned real-life stories into compelling films. Talvar explored the Aarushi-Hemraj murder case, Chhapaak told the story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, while Sam Bahadur brought the life of Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw to the big screen. Her next, Daayra, seems to be following a similar path. But unlike her earlier films, very little is known about the real-life inspiration, if there is one, behind this story.

The makers have been careful about revealing details of the film. The posters, however, may have dropped a few hints. There are microphones, trucks, open fields and two officers who appear to be central to the narrative. That has been enough for the internet to start putting the pieces together. Considering Meghna’s history of drawing from real events, the obvious question is whether Daayra too has been inspired by an incident from the past. If it has, which one?

The posters seem to suggest a story involving two officers who find themselves on opposite sides. But what led them there, and what is the larger incident that brings them together, remains unclear. For now, the makers are giving audiences just enough to speculate without actually revealing what the film is about. And perhaps that is exactly the point.

The wait for answers may finally end with the trailer, which is scheduled to release on August 31, 2026. Produced by Junglee Pictures and Dr Jayantilal Gada (Pen Studios), and distributed by Pen Marudhar, Daayra will be released in cinemas on September 18, 2026.
