Is Romance Back In Business?

After years of dominance by action spectacles, massive franchises, and high-octane visual effects, the Indian box office is witnessing a heartening return to its roots. Romance and intense love stories are making a definitive comeback, proving that emotional depth and relationship driven storytelling remain a cornerstone of cinematic success.

The commercial trajectory of the genre highlights a massive shift in audience appetite. In 2023 and 2024, the industry saw only 4 romantic releases each year, which contributed a modest 10% to the annual box office. However, 2025 marked a turning point as the number of romantic films surged to 10. This increase nearly doubled the genre's contribution to approximately 20% of the total box office, with these titles collectively generating close to 700 crore.

This resurgence is driven by both breakout underdog successes and a renewed sense of nostalgia. Films like Saiyaara, Tere Ishq Mein, and Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, alongside the historic re-release of Sanam Teri Kasam, have demonstrated that well-crafted romance often amplified by soulful music and strong star appeal, can significantly outperform its budget. These films have shown that in an increasingly crowded content landscape, heartfelt narratives are once again commanding significant audience attention and a larger share of the box-office pie.

Mamta Kamtikar, Chief Business Officer At Junglee Pictures said “Romance as a genre has always been ever green and has evolved over the past few years. Hindi cinema has delivered some of its biggest and most consistent successes through love stories, from DDLJ to the latest blockbuster Saiyaara, which clocked in over Rs. 320 Crs in India. . When romance films are mounted with strong music, emotional storytelling and relatability they cut across demographics and drive repeat viewing, especially through music-led recall. Even newer-age relationship dramas like Tere Ishq Mein and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, both generating over Rs. 100 Crs each at box office,  have demonstrated that the genre continues to find audience traction when executed well. Romance is one of the best ROI genres because of its music revenue, repeat value, and long-tail consumption across OTT and satellite. Romance also lends itself to casting of newer talent. We just need to tell love stories that feel real, rooted, and contemporary supported with ear catching music.”

Kalpesh Damani, Associate Producer at Junglee Pictures added, “Hindi cinema’s biggest gap in the last decade wasn’t audience erosion, it was emotional hesitation. As filmmakers moved toward irony, spectacle, and genre safety, romance was sidelined. What we are witnessing now is not a comeback of romance, but a correction of intent, a return to emotional conviction as the core of storytelling. In today’s fragmented content ecosystem, where attention is constantly divided, romance stands out precisely because it demands stillness and emotional investment. Choosing to tell a love story today is not the safe choice, it is the boldest one, because it relies on sincerity over stimulus and connection over distraction. Romance remains the most scalable genre in cinema, it builds actors into stars, transforms songs into cultural memory, and travels seamlessly across languages and geographies. A successful love story does not end at the box office; it extends into music charts, reels, weddings, and collective nostalgia.”

Looking ahead, the momentum for love stories continues to build with an impressive slate of upcoming titles. The industry is gearing up for a romantic wave with films such as Do Deewane Seher Mein, Hai Jawaani To Ishq Hona Chaiye, Chaand Mera Dil, and Cocktail 2. The excitement further extends to highly anticipated projects like Pati Patni Aur Woh Do, Love and War, Awarapan 2, Sanam Teri Kasam 2, and Tu Ya Main. These upcoming releases signal that romance is not just back; it is ready to lead the charge at the box office once again.
