Big Change for Indian Cinema: CBFC to make subtitles and accessibility features mandatory for all films

Indian cinema is soon to witness a significant transformation. Preparations are underway to make subtitles and other accessibility features mandatory for films, with the aim of making cinema a more inclusive medium.

Under the new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), filmmakers will now be required to provide features such as closed captioning and audio descriptions alongside their films. The objective is to extend the cinematic experience to those viewers who face hearing or visual impairments.

According to the new framework, whenever a film is submitted for censor certification, producers must also provide a copy of the film that incorporates these accessibility features. This move is being hailed as a crucial initiative aimed at making the experience of watching films in theaters more accessible for these audiences.

However, this decision has also sparked a debate within certain sections of the industry. Some producers express concern that the cost of producing these technical features could drive up overall film budgets, a particular challenge for small-budget productions.

Nevertheless, many filmmakers believe that this shift could usher Indian cinema into a new era. In the times to come, the cinema-going experience will no longer be confined merely to entertainment; it will evolve to become more accessible and inclusive for a wider spectrum of people.
