The big-scale action thriller Dhurandhar kicked off its theatrical run with a strong Day-1 showing, one of the biggest openings of 2025, signalling renewed audience appetite for large-scale, intense Hindi cinema. The gamble taken by producers at Jio Studios and B62 Studios and director Aditya Dhar has been rewarded.
According to early figures, Dhurandhar has grossed 28.60 crore on first day across, soaring past the collections of the top openers of year, including Chhaava. The overall Hindi-version occupancy hovered with major urban centres like Delhi-NCR and Mumbai registering solid turnout. In international circuits too, the film has opened big.
This performance places Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar, as the biggest Day-1 opener in lead actor Ranveer Singh’s career. It comfortably surpasses openings of his previous hits and emerges among the top three openers of the year for a Hindi film.
The combination of bankable names like Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna, R. Madhavan, Arjun Rampal and Sara Arjun - a heavy-duty spy-thriller premise, and a large release slate seems to have paid off. Despite a long runtime and hefty subject matter, the film managed to draw in audiences across metros and beyond, suggesting that viewers remain willing to commit when the spectacle and storytelling promise enough.
The bookings ballooned on the day of release when the pre-release buzz, word-of-mouth and a sense of anticipation translated into real footfalls. Many afternoon and evening shows saw occupancy surge and the trends continue to date.
In a year where multiple genres, from romance to horror to family dramas, have tried to capture audiences, Dhurandhar’s success suggests that there’s robust demand for high-stakes, politically or thematically heavy action thrillers.
Even amid growing streaming releases and concerns about film-going fatigue, the strong opening proves that if a film delivers ambition, star-presence and a compelling theatrical release remains a powerful draw.
Trends show that Dhurandhar will be able its hold over the weekend with footfalls remaining strong for Day 2 and Day 3, and the momentum will carry the film towards a major first-weekend milestone. With positive word-of-mouth continuing, the film could set a new benchmark for big-budget actioners in India’s 2025 box-office.
Produced by Jyoti Deshpande, Lokesh Dhar and Aditya Dhar, Dhurandhar released worldwide on December 5, 2025.
