Sholay Turns 50: Celebrating the timeless classic and its iconic dialogues

Bollywood's iconic film 'Sholay' released on 15 August 1975 is going to complete its 50 years this year. This blockbuster directed by Ramesh Sippy not only created a stir at the box office of that era, but has also ruled the hearts and minds of people generation after generation. Characters like Gabbar, Jai-Veeru, Thakur and Basanti are still a part of pop culture. Hardly anyone would have thought at that time that the magic of these characters and their dialogues would remain intact even after half a century. Its dialogues started being repeated in every household. Some famous dialogues of 'Sholay':

The story of ‘Sholay’ revolves around Ramgarh village, its people and the terror of dacoit Gabbar Singh. Jai-Veeru’s friendship, Thakur’s revenge and Basanti’s playfulness made the film memorable. The brilliant performances of Dharmendra, Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri, Amjad Khan and other actors made it a classic. Even after 50 years, there has been no decrease in the popularity of ‘Sholay’. This 15th August, the film is not just celebrating its golden jubilee but also marks a milestone in Indian cinema.
