96th birth anniversary: Kishore Kumar, The timeless voice that still lives on

There are some names in the world of Hindi cinema that do not go with time, but go beyond time. One such name is Kishore Kumar. Today, 4th August is the 96th birth anniversary of this great singer, actor, musician and director. Hindi cinema seems incomplete without him.

Kishore Kumar was born in 1929 in Khandwa district of Madhya Pradesh. His real name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. He was fond of music and acting since childhood. Father Kunjalal Ganguly was a lawyer by profession, but Kishore liked the world of music, not law. In his career, Kishore Da gave one evergreen song after another “Mere Sapno Ki Rani”, “Gata Rahe Mera Dil”, “Neele Neele Amber Par”, “Dil Kya Kare”, and many more songs that are still in the hearts of people. But do you know that despite such a successful career, Kishore Kumar never got a National Award?

His son Amit Kumar said in an interview that he had every possibility of getting a National Award for ‘Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein’, but he was asked for a bribe for it, which he flatly refused. In the film ‘Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein’, he not only acted, but also handled direction and music. The film received a lot of appreciation, but could not get the award.

Kishore Kumar had four marriages, Ruma Ghosh, Madhubala, Yogita Bali and Leena Chandravarkar. His relationship with Madhubala was very special, which is considered to be one of the most emotional parts of his life. Kishore Da said goodbye to the world on 13 October 1987, but his voice is still alive in every heart.
