The appointment is effective for a five-year term beginning May 1, 2025. In an exchange filing dated Friday, April 25, 2025, the company stated, “The Board of Directors of the Company at its meeting held today, on the recommendation of the Human Resources, Nomination and Remuneration Committee, considered and appointed Shri Anant M. Ambani (DIN: 07945702), a Non-Executive Director of the Company, as Whole-time Director designated as Executive Director of the Company.”
Before this appointment, Anant Ambani was serving as a Non-Executive Director on the board of Reliance Industries. He is also part of several other Reliance group entities, including Jio Platforms, Reliance Retail Ventures, Reliance New Energy, and Reliance New Solar Energy. Since September 2022, he has also been on the board of the Reliance Foundation.
Anant has played a pivotal role in Vantara, a Reliance initiative that is regarded as the world’s largest animal rescue and rehabilitation centre—reflecting his commitment to environmental and wildlife causes. His siblings, Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani, are also involved in the group’s leadership. Both currently serve as Non-Executive Directors on the Reliance Board. Akash is the Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the conglomerate’s telecom and digital services division, while Isha holds the position of Executive Director at Reliance Retail Ventures Ltd.
In 2023, global proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (ISS) recommended that shareholders vote against Anant Ambani’s appointment to the board, citing his relatively young age and limited boardroom experience. According to a Bloomberg report, ISS expressed concern over his "limited leadership/board experience of around six years" and questioned his potential contribution to the board. However, the firm supported the appointments of Akash and Isha Ambani.
In contrast, another international proxy firm, Glass Lewis, supported Anant’s nomination. The firm stated, “We do not single out Anant Ambani from the other siblings based on experience.” Decky Windarto, Glass Lewis’s Director of Asia-Pacific Research, pointed out that Anant’s siblings are only three years older and possess similar levels of professional experience.
