Indian-origin rapper Tommy Genesis has been embroiled in controversy over her new music video "True Blue". In this video, she is seen wearing makeup like Hindu goddess Maa Kali, but the style and attire in which she is seen has hurt the religious sentiments of the people. In the video, Tommy has painted her entire body in blue color, which is inspired by the traditional form of Maa Kali. She is wearing a golden bikini and is also seen wearing heavy gold jewelry - maang tika, nath, necklace, earrings and bangles. She also has a red bindi on her forehead.
The most objection is being raised about the scene in which a cross mark is made on her private part. This has hurt the religious sentiments of not only Hindus but also the Christian community. Users on social media are strongly criticizing this video and calling it an insult to religious symbols.
Famous Indian rapper Raftaar shared a screenshot of this video and wrote, "Report it. It should not exist." (Report it, it should not exist). After this reaction of Raftaar, many users on social media are also reporting this video. One user wrote, "Maa Kali is the mother of the universe. We worship her as a protector. Our gods and goddesses have been insulted for years, now doing this for popularity is the height of meanness." Another user wrote, "Only artists like Raftaar and Panther Bhai represent real hip hop who respect their culture."
This video of Tommy Genesis has once again raised the question that to what extent is the use of religious symbols justified in the name of freedom of expression. This attempt to play with religious sentiments has been disliked by many people.
