Filmmaker and actor Anurag Kashyap has expressed his displeasure over the ongoing controversy over the release of the film 'Phule'. The film is based on the life of social reformers Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule, whose release was scheduled for April 11, but its release was postponed after the Brahmin community in Maharashtra raised objections. Now the film is likely to release on April 25.
Anurag Kashyap expressed his displeasure on Instagram story and wrote, “The first play of my life was on Jyotiba and Savitribai Phule. If there was no casteism in this country, then why would the Phule couple need to fight? Today a community is feeling ashamed, but those who actually have casteist thinking should be ashamed. After all, how did this film reach people even before its release?” Kashyap also alleged that not only ‘Phule’, but many other films are also becoming victims of censorship. Referring to films like ‘Punjab 95’, ‘Tees’, ‘Dhadak 2’ and ‘Santosh’, he said that efforts are being made to suppress all the films that expose the truth.
He also questioned the attitude of CBFC (Censor Board). The board gave the film a ‘U’ certificate on April 7 and suggested some changes – like removing words like ‘Maang’, ‘Mahar’ and ‘Peshwai’, and changing ‘Teen Hazar Saal Purni Gulaami’ to ‘Kitne Saal Purni Gulaami’. Director Anant Mahadevan followed all the instructions of the censor board, but the film’s release had to be postponed due to protests. In the end, Kashyap wrote, “When you say that casteism has ended, then why are you afraid of films based on characters like Phule? First decide – is there casteism in India or not? The public is not stupid.”
