One of the most iconic films of Indian cinema, Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay' is still famous for its memorable dialogues and scenes. Recently, the director shared some interesting experiences related to the making of this film. He told how he never felt the need to consult co-writer Javed Akhtar for changes in the film. Also, he mentioned a special scene filmed between Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, which took a full 23 days to shoot a scene of just two minutes.
Ramesh Sippy gave detailed information about this scene in a masterclass during the International Film Festival (IFFI) held in Goa. He said that this scene, which shows the silent and unspoken love between Amitabh and Jaya's characters, was shot in the evening at the moment when day was changing from night. The director said that this moment seemed absolutely appropriate for this scene. When he talked with the cameraman, he came to know that he would have only two minutes to capture this special lighting.
Ramesh Sippy said, "The scene between Amitabh and Jaya depicts a silent love, as Jaya's character is a widow. This scene depicts the changing time from day to night. When I talked to the cameraman, he told me that this scene can be shot only at that time, so we had only two minutes."
Sippy also said that the shooting schedule of 'Sholay' was planned in such a way that other scenes were shot in the morning and afternoon and preparations for this special scene were done in the evening. About his father's reaction to this scene, Sippy said, "My father, who was the producer of this film, never asked why I was taking 23 days for a scene. He gave me the freedom to work in my own way." Apart from this, he also said that he did not need the help of dialogue writer duo Salim-Javed during the shooting of the film, because the dialogues of the film were already written. Due to this, there was no need to take advice from Javed Akhtar.
