The teaser of Maidaan was unveiled on March 30, 2023. It gave a glimpse of the 1952 Helsinki Summer Olympics and the difficulties with which the Indian team played against teams with more facilities and equipment, in this case facing the mighty Yugoslavians. Ajay plays the Indian team coach who delivered a powerful dialogue of, "Aaj maidaan mein utarna gyarah par dikhna ek. (Enter the field as eleven but play as one)."

Maidaan was originally scheduled to release on November 27, 2020. It got postponed due to the sudden outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. After clearing several hurdles, the makers locked June 3, 2022, for its release. Unfortunately, it got postponed once again to February 17, 2023, and then to June 23, 2023. The makers are finally ready with the product which is said to be Ajay's best in the recent years.

Produced by Zee Studios, Boney Kapoor, Akash Chawla, and Arunava Joy Sengupta, the screenplay and dialogues are written by Saiwyn Quadras and Ritesh Shah respectively. The film also stars Priyamani, Gajraj Rao and Rudranil Ghosh.
