Aamir Khan and Kiara Advani’s bank commercial irks netizens, sparks new controversy over trying to bring change in traditions

Looks like trolling for Aamir Khan won’t stop anytime soon. An advertisement of a bank featuring Aamir and Kiara Advani has sparked outrage on social media for apparently ‘hurting Hindu sentiments’. However, the advertisement in question does not blatantly question any Hindu traditions but instead makes for an emotional commercial that is hinged on humanity instead of adhering to age-old orthodox traditions. On social media, many bashed the ad including The Kashmir Files filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri.

The advertisement shows Aamir and Kiara as a newly married couple who break traditions and instead of having the ‘vidaai’ and ‘griha-pravesh’ for the bride (Kiara) at her husband’s house shows Aamir as the groom becoming a ‘ghar jamai’ and relocating to his wife’s house because of her wheelchair bound father. The advertisement harps on the fact that it should not be mandatory to adhere to orthodox traditions but instead in several instances a change is needed to accept new situations and challenges.

It was heartening to see that the bride’s parents are accorded the same amount of care and respect in the advertisement that is generally bestowed on the groom’s parents in Indian households. In most Indian homes, the wife or the bahu is not allowed to care for her ageing parents instead told to concentrate and care for her in-laws and said that her ‘marital house’ is her ‘new home’ and she must break ties or lessen the bond with her blood relations after her marriage.

However, instead of understanding the deep emotion and lesson behind the commercial, the netizens jumped the gun and started sending hate towards Aamir because the advertisement showed a Hindu couple and marriage ceremony instead of depicting some other religion. Vivek Agnihotri also chimed in and said, “I just fail to understand since when Banks have become responsible for changing social & religious traditions? I think @aubankindia should do activism by changing corrupt banking system. Aisi bakwaas karte hain fir kehte hain Hindus are trolling. Idiots.”

Soon afterwards, netizens started demanding a boycott of the bank and it started trending. However, neither the bank nor the actors have commented on the matter so far though.
