Kriti Sanon had teamed up with Sushant Singh Rajput for Dinesh Vijan's Raabta (2017). Despite having an incredible star cast that included Rajkummar Rao, Jim Sarbh and Varun Sharma, the film failed to impress the audience. Kriti, in a recent interview, spoke about discussing Raabta's poor reviews with Sushant and Dinesh. The actress said the trio sulked over wine after the critics rejected the film.
Recalling the night, Kriti told, "It was a funny night. We were all really sulky, we were depressed, we’d gone through really bad reviews and we didn’t know what to say. Dino was just like, ‘Aajao yaar, mood kharab hai'. We went there and opened a bottle of wine. Dino said, ‘I think it’s the flashbacks, I should have made it simple. Why did we go tribal?’ Earlier, there was a draft that had a normal raaja-raani. It’s more relatable to people, right? But we felt like we wanted to go a little different… I was having a glass of wine, and I said, ‘I told you this!"

The actress further added, "You have to accept what has happened. You’re making films for the audience, you can’t say unko samajh nahi aayi. Agar unko samajh nahi aayi tumhari galti hai. You can’t say, ‘We were ahead of our time’. No, you’re making films for that time, you have to connect to the audience. Where did you fail? You have to figure that out."
Raabta was a reincarnation drama. On the film's 4th anniversary in 2021, Kriti shared a video on Instagram and wrote, "I believe in connection, I believe that we are meant to meet the people we do.. My Raabta with Sushant, Dinoo and MaddockFilms was just meant to be..Films come and go.. But every single film has so so many memories behind it.. The connections we make & the moments we live with each other stay within us.. Some more than others..Raabta was one of my best and most memorable experiences and it will ALWAYS remain extremely close to my heart.. Little did i know that it would be our first and last.."
The film was Kriti and Sushant's first and last film together.
