Hindi version of Thalaivii to release on OTT two weeks after debuting in theatres, multiplex chain disappointed; Kangana Ranaut reacts

Kangana Ranaut and Arvind Swami's Thalaivii is scheduled to release in theatres on September 10 after multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on the life of actress and politician J Jayalalithaa, the multilingual film is directed by Vijay. However, days before Thalaivii's release, the Hindi version of the biographical film has hit a roadblock. Multiplex chains- PVR and Inox have reportedly refused to release the Hindi version because the window to its Netflix premiere is too narrow. The film is expected to come to Netflix within two weeks of its release and PVR and Inox were apparently demanding a four-week window.

As per Kangana, the multiplex chains refused to screen the South versions which will apparently come on Amazon Prime Video after four weeks. Now, on Saturday, PVR issued a statement and gave a green signal to screen the Tamil and Telugu versions of Thalaivii on September 10. The statement read, "Thalaivii is one of the most keenly awaited films. Also, Ms Kangana Ranaut's acting prowess and exceptional box office pull are well-established facts. We are thankful to Thalaivii team for offering a four-week theatrical window for its Tamil and Telugu language versions."

The multiplex further expressed disappointment that the Hindi version will get a digital release in just 2 weeks of its theatrical debut. "We are delighted to be able to play Thalaivii in Tamil and Telugu language at our cinemas, however, we are disappointed that for the Hindi language version, Thalaivii team has decided to offer only a 2 week window. We would like to appeal to Ms Kangana, Mr Vishnu Induri II Mr Shailesh Singh to keep a uniform window of 4 weeks across all language versions and therefore allow all cinemas across the country to showcase Thalaivii to audiences, on the big screen. Our best wishes to the Thalaivii team!" the statement read.

Sharing the statement, Kangana assured that the team will find a solution to the dispute at the earliest. "PVR's decision to screen the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film is a ray of hope for Team Thalaivii as well as all those cinegoers who are waiting to rush back to their favourite multiplex chain for a cinematic experience. I am personally moved by the kind words used for me. Team Thalaivii, and I hope with talks, and a passion for the theatrical experience, we can come together to find a solution so that the Hindi version can also find love and appreciation on the big screen @pvrcinemas_official - Lots of Love, Kangana," she wrote in her response.
