Relief for Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt, Bombay High Court refuses to stay the release of Gangubai Kathiawadi over defamation case

For Alia Bhatt and filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Gangubai Kathiawadi was a ride filled with various obstacles. From lockdown to Alia and Sanjay testing positive for COVID-19, a lot happened. Not just this, biographical film based on a brothel madam of Kamathipura went to the court too. Babuji Shah, who claims to be the adopted son of late Gangubai, a brothel madam, had filed a criminal defamation case against Alia, Sanjay and two writers.

In the month of March, an additional chief metropolitan magistrate court in Mumbai had issued summon to Alia, Sanjay and the writers to present themselves on May 21 in the court. Now, the Bombay High Court has granted an interim stay on criminal defamation proceedings against Alia and the makers of Gangubai Kathiawadi. The court also refused to stay the release of the film.

In December last year, Babuji Shah, in his suit filed through Advocate Narendra Dubey, claimed that a chapter on Gangubai in Mafia Queens of Mumbai was defamatory, tarnished her reputation and infringed upon the right to privacy and self-respect of his deceased mother.

Later, in February this year, a Mumbai City Civil Court dismissed the suit seeking a permanent injunction against Bhansali Productions, Alia and Mafia Queens of Mumbai author Hussain Zaidi, on whose book the film Gangubai Kathiawadi is based.
