Ayushmann Khurrana and Tahira Kashyap extend their support to Delhi women ragpickers to sell handmade Rakhis

Actor Ayushmann Khurrana and his wife, author-filmmaker Tahira Kashyap, have come out in support of women ragpickers in New Delhi. The two have for years supported a non-profit organization in Delhi named Gulmeher, a women's collective of waste-pickers turned artisans. The NGO works with about 200 women ragpickers and this contribution will help them look after themselves and their families. The actor’s support will not only help almost 200 women rag pickers but will also feed their creative skills as this year the NGO has taken an initiative to sell handmade Rakhis. All the proceeds of this initiative will contribute to the well being of these underprivileged women.

Talking about this nobel initiative by the NGO, Ayushmann shared with a news agency, “Tahira and I are deeply and emotionally invested in Gulmeher (the NGO). The organisationis doing outstanding work to support this needy segment of the population in Delhi.”

Considering the ongoing lockdown situation, the actor added saying these women are “at most risk” as their flow of income has been affected to a great extend during these tough times. However, the couple’s support to bring attention to the situation can help to improve their present and calls it the “right direction” to empower women in society.

When COVID-19 had hit India and a lockdown was imposed, even then the couple had helped the rag-pickers. "Coronavirus has impacted people from every stratum of life. But it has hit the lower-income groups the hardest and it is our duty as citizens of this nation to come forward and support the people in dire need. Tahira and I have been associated with Gulmeher, a non-profit organization, for years and we are doing every bit possible to support these women who are absolutely distraught now," Ayushmann had earlier said.

Tahira had said that how Indians support each other in this moment of crisis will define us as a nation. "While us Indians are impacted with COVID-19, for some people the impact will be much more destabilising, especially economically. We have to protect the lower-income, daily wage earning community like our brothers and sisters in this time of crisis."

Well, the couple is undoubtedly coming out in support of several needy people since the very beginning.
