Absolute national shame: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Taapsee Pannu and Kiara Advani join the movement of 'Justice for Jayaraj and Fenix'

At a time when the death of American-African man George Floyd has sparked movements across the globe, a horrific case of police brutality in Tamil Nadu’s Tuticorin has jolted India. The shocking incident happened on June 19, when 59-year-old P Jayaraj and his 31-year-old son Bennicks (Fenix) were picked up for questioning by the cops in Sathankulam police for violating lockdown rules and keeping their mobile shop open beyond the permitted time. It is being alleged that they were brutally thrashed, sodomized, and tortured by the police while in custody, leading to their deaths. On June 22, Fenix reportedly died at Kovilpatti General Hospital, while his father Jayaraj breathed last on June 23.

Now, the incident has led to an outrage and netizens are raising their voice, demanding justice for them. Bollywood celebrities Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Taapsee Pannu, Kiara Advani, Rakul Preet Singh, Riteish Deshmukh, Genelia Deshmukh, Nimrat Kaur, Neha Dhupia and Vir Das too have expressed concern and joined the movement for justice with the hashtag #JusticeForJayarajandFenix. 

Priyanka tweeted a note on the horrific incident and wrote, "#JusticeForJayarajandBennicks

Taapsee tweeted, "This might just be one case out of many but it takes only one case to begin the snowball effect. #JusticeforJayarajAndFenix It could’ve been anyone we know. Details are scary and gut wrenching."

Kiara, Rakul, Riteish, Genelia, Nimrat, Neha and Vir also expressed their grief on the incident.
