FamilyFare Awards: All award functions demoted me and Farhan Akhtar from main leads: Abhay Deol gives example of the 'lobby treatment' in Bollywood through his film ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’

Abhay Deol is known to be a thinking actor. He is known to be different, albeit quirky and does not shy away from throwing hard words at Bollywood. He is one of the few actors who have spoken against fairness creams and often takes to social media to bring the celebs down from their high pedestal. When our Bollywood biggies were lending support to #BlackLivesMatter and #GeorgeFloyd, he called them farce as they were jumping on the bandwagon but unable to stand for their own countrymen or come forward for migrants, poor and downtrodden.

Now, that the country is reeling under another threat wherein the netizens are threatening to boycott films due to nepotism and lobbying, he has once again brought out the weird way industry works. Talking about the nexus and the way Bollywood glorifies one actor and brings down others he took to Instagram to share an incident. Sharing a still from his popular film Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, he wrote, ““Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”, released in 2011. Need to chant this title to myself everyday nowadays! Also a great watch when anxious or stressed. I would like to mention that almost all the award functions demoted me and Farhan from main leads, and nominated us as “supporting actors”. Hrithik and Katrina were nominated as “actors in a leading role”. So by the industry’s own logic, this was a film about a man and a woman falling in love, with the man supported by his friends for whatever decisions he takes. There are many covert and overt ways in which people in the industry lobby against you. In this case it was shamelessly overt. I of course boycotted the awards but Farhan was ok with it. #familyfareawards Very creative artwork @kalakkii.”

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was directed by Zoya Akhtar and is a tale of three friends who go on a road trip in order to celebrate a bachelor party for one of the protagonists. The film harps more about the bond between the three and how the trip makes all of them realize and come to terms with what is missing in their lives. It becomes a road of self-discovery for them and is far from a conventional romantic love story.

After the suicide of Sushant Singh Rajput, Bollywood has come under severe flak for being biased and nepotistic. People have started questioning the workings of the film industry and how it manages to nurture and celebrate children from film families as actors and stars but gives a raw deal to outsiders who are more talented than them.
