Akshay Kumar pays tribute to CRPF martyrs on Shaurya Diwas

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, now Bollywood superstar Akshay Kuamr has paid tribute to the martyrs of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) today on the occasion of Shaurya Diwas or Valour Day. In a tweet penned in Hindi, the actor paid homage to the bravery of CRPF soldiers who courageously fought off an attack by Pakistani force on April 9, 1965. 

CRPF marks April 9 as Shaurya Diwas or Valour Day and Akshay in his tweet went ahead to explain why this day is such a significant one. He wrote, “On April 9, 1965, CRPF personnel fought off an enemy brigade bigger than them at Gujarat's Sardar Post and set an example. Congratulations to all of you on the 'Shaurya Diwas' celebrated in the memory of Veergatha and tribute to the brave martyrs.” His tweet won the praise of his fans and netizens alike.

Shaurya Diwas or Valour Day is celebrated to commemorate the bravery of CRPF's 2nd Battalion that comprised of 150 soldiers take on the heavily armed Pakistani force that consisted of 3,500 men of the 51st Infantry Brigade, among other divisions. The assault took place on a tactically disadvantageous flat area and started at 3.30 pm and went on for 12 gruelling hours during which the enemy made three attempts to overrun the CRPF post. Six CRPF soldiers died in the attack. However, the valiant CRPF personnel killed 34 and captured four Pakistani soldiers. The historic battle took place 55 years ago. 

President Ram Nath Kovind also honoured the force and said that it had written a ‘golden history’ on this day with their extraordinary bravery, patriotism, valour and sacrifice.
