The alarming spread of Coronavirus has confined the citizens of India to their homes. With a complete lockdown announced till April 14, everyone is locked inside their houses. Now, with nearly one week left for the shutdown to lift, Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi engaged his countrymen by asking them to light a candle, diya or mobile flashlight for nine minutes at 9 pm today. A measure to show unity, the activity has been receiving a great response, just like the janta curfew that took place on March 22.

I’ve learnt the significance of lighting a diya from my father. He taught me that whenever you light a diya, you pray for everyone’s health and happiness. Tonight, I lit the diya with all my brothers and sisters of India. I prayed for protection, good health and prosperity of the whole of India. I saluted our nation's collective spirit and our indomitable courage in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. We are stronger than the threat the virus poses and we shall overcome #9MinutesForIndia
Siblings Athiya Shetty and Ahan Shetty also participated in this initiative.
