From talking about menstruation in ‘PadMan’, playing transgender in ‘Laxmmi Bomb’, IVF in ‘Good Newwz’ and presenting ‘Durgavati’, Akshay Kumar is ensuring to break gender stereotypes

Having dealt with taboo topics such as menstrual health in PadMan and women's sanitation in Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, Akshay Kumar has always attempted to break gender stereotypes. In Mission Mangal, he played a smaller role of an ISRO scientist, giving importance to the women in his film. His next project is Good Newwz with Kareena Kapoor Khan, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani. The film deals with In vitro fertilization and Akshay promises to bring the serious subject of 'IVF thoda commercially' to the audience.

In fact, recently he made an announcement of Durgavati starring Bhumi Pednekar. While he assumes the role of the presenter, he proudly called Bhumi the hero in the film. The news was shared with an image where Bhumi is holding the placard of hero, Akshay and Bhushan Kumar of being presenters, along with director and producers. Nonetheless, Bhumi thanked her Toilet: Ek Prem Katha co-star for believing in her.

Not to forget, Akshay will also be seen in Laxmmi Bomb and its first look had him in a transgender get-up. Claiming that "it is a character he's both excited and nervous about but then life begins at the end of the comfort zone", Akshay was seen wearing a red saree, a big red bindi and a wig tied up in a bun. Well, it would not be wrong to say that Akshay's choice of films is a sign of change -- towards a more mature thought process and mindset. Rather, looking at Akshay's current filmography, one realizes that the mainstream superstar is no longer hesitant to experiment. He is no longer shy of trying out what the alternative hero was doing all along and wishes to break stereotypes.

His upcoming films include Prithviraj, based on the life and heroism of the fearless king Prithviraj Chauhan. It stars Manushi Chhillar in the role of the Sanyogita, the love of his life. Apart from that, he has Bachchan Pandey with Kriti Sanon, which is slated to release on Christmas 2020. Not to miss, his forthcoming spy thriller Bell Bottom and Rohit Shetty's cop film Sooryavanshi.

To say the least, ditching larger-than-life characters, unrealistic storylines and slapstick humour, several Hindi cinema superstars have undergone changes and are now focussing more on content that the audience relates to. Certainly, Akshay Kumar tops the list of celebs who aim to do that with Indian cinema.
