Bala plagiarism row: Ayushmann Khurrana's film lands in trouble as Kamal Kant Chandra files police complaint against the makers

Ayushmann Khurrana is all set to feature next in Bala, a film about a man who is balding prematurely and how he deals with it. Produced by Dinesh Vijan and directed by Amar Kaushik, Bala also stars Bhumi Pednekar and Yami Gautam. While Bhumi plays a dusky small town educated woman, Yami essays the role of a supermodel based in Lucknow. While the film has piqued the interest of the audience, it landed into trouble recently after a case was filed against the actor along with director and producer Dinesh Vijan by assistant director Kamal Kant Chandra for allegedly plagiarising the story of their upcoming film.

Now as the actors have already kickstarted the shoot of the film, it looks like the trouble for them has not yet ended. As per a report in a leading daily, Kamal has filed a criminal complaint under Section 420 (cheating) and 406 (breach of trust) against the actor and the makers at the Kashimira police station in Mira Road, thereby accusing them of lifting the central plot of a prematurely balding man from his project, Wig. Reportedly, Kamal has claimed that lawyers of trio had falsely mentioned in the court that Bala is in scripting stage. "It's wrong to start shooting before the court has given its verdict. At the last hearing, they said that they would take time to develop the script. How did they start shooting in 15 days? This means they gave a misleading picture to the court. I approached the vacation bench four days ago, but they stated that I should wait for the next hearing on June 10. But the makers might finish [a chunk of] the film by then and argue that since a lot of money is at stake, the court should rule in their favour," he has pointed out, as quoted by the daily.

While Kamal maintained that Ayushmann had expressed interest in the film's idea in 2017, the actor's legal team clarified to the daily, "What has been communicated to you is a mala fide distortion of facts, specially with regard to the proceedings of April 9. Since the matter is sub-judice, we are not commenting any further. Our script is original, and we will show that to the court when the matter comes up." On the other hand, spokesperson of Maddock Films concluded by saying that the court has not restrained them from going ahead with the film's shoot.

Bala also features Saurab Shukla, Jaaved Jaaferi and Seema Pahwa in pivotal roles. It will be shot in Mumbai and Kanpur.
