Important to be responsible towards those suffering: Deepika Padukone’s TLLL Foundation takes a dig at Kangana Ranaut’s 'Mental Hai Kya' title

The title of Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Mental Hai Kya has not impressed several quarters and Deepika Padukone’s Live Love Laugh Foundation is one of them. After the release of the motion poster of the film, featuring Kangana and Rajkummar Rao, TLLL Foundation, in a series of tweets, said that it is important to be “responsible and sensitive towards the needs of those suffering”.

“It is time we put an end to the use of words, imagery and/or the portrayal of persons with mental illness in a way that reinforces stereotypes. Many millions who suffer with mental illness in India already face tremendous stigma. Therefore, it is extremely important to be responsible and sensitive towards the needs of those suffering,” read on TLLL Foundation’s Twitter.

The Live Love Laugh Foundation was founded in 2015 by Deepika Padukone to bring awareness about mental health in India.

Ahead of the objection raised to the title of the film by TLLF, the Indian Psychiatric Society (IPS) on Thursday wrote to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), raising "serious objections" to the film's title. The IPS demanded that the CBFC censor any sequence in the movie that is violating the rights of people with mental disorders.

In response to the criticism, makers of Mental Hai Kya issued a statement, saying that the film is a “fictional thriller genre feature” that will entertain audiences and does not hurt sentiments.

“The makers would like to maintain that Mental Hai Kya is a fictional thriller genre feature film meant to entertain audiences and it does not offend, discriminate or disregard any person. In fact the film is a mainstream entertainer which makes a larger point,” read the statement issued by the makers.

Directed by Prakash Kovelamudi, Mental Hai Kya will release on June 21.
