Neena Gupta has opened up about her initial struggle in the film industry during her interview with an eminent journalist and said that it was really difficult for her to survive without work. While conversing, Neena admitted that she was shy enough to ask and that, probably, is the reason why people from the industry, whom she knew well, also didn’t offer work to her.
Especially filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Neena said, adding that she is good friends with him and his wife Soni Razdan, yet he didn’t oblige. Neena, hence, has “big grudges” against her friends for not giving her work. “Big grudges, none of my friends gave me work, none of my friends. I have very close friends, who have been making movies and he was making one small movie and a theatre actor from my play suggested my name to him and woh bhool gaya tha,” Neena said during the interview.

“Mere apne logo ne mujhe, kisi ne, kaam nahi diya. I am so close to Soni, Mahesh Bhatt... Mahesh ne kabhi mujhe kaam nahi diya, kabhi bhi nahi diya. Kisi ne bhi nahi diya, I wonder why. I am too shy to ask, maybe that's why,” she added.
In fact, Neena also revealed that she lost out on a role in Shekhar Kapur’s film once as she did not take an initiative because of her shy attitude. While travelling on a flight with the filmmaker, Neena was told by Shekhar that he will call her for a role. Shekhar, however, didn’t call Neena and later, told her that another actress was cast in the role.
“When I came back, I didn’t call him because he said he will call me. And later on, when he met me, he said, ‘Idiot! You missed that role.’ So, I said, ‘But, you were supposed to call.’ He said, ‘Toh tum call kar leti nah’,” Neena added.
Neena Gupta, last seen in Badhaai Ho, is currently filming Gwalior with Sanjay Mishra. She is also known for her appearance in the television series Saans and Siski.
