Varun Dhawan denies that Kalank’s story is inspired by Shauna Singh Baldwin’s book ‘What The Body Remembers’

Varun Dhawan who is all geared up for his upcoming release Kalank has refuted the fact that the period drama is inspired by Shauna Singh Baldwin’s book What The Body Remembers. The rumours were doing the rounds that the film is based on the book but at a recent promotional event, Varun cleared the air. The actor said that although he has no idea about the story of the novel yet he does not think that the film is based on the book’s premise.

Varun said, “I honestly have not read the book. I have no knowledge of that. But I don’t think the premise is the same because the actual premise of our film is not open to anyone yet. Whatever we have shown till now, we have not shown the actual premise at all. Yes, there is a love story, but the film is a lot more than that. There are a lot of secrets and mysteries in the film, and you will know about it only on April 17, when the film releases."

He further added, “I think when people will watch the film, then they can make up their mind about that. But, as far as I know, our story has been in the process for a long time. Karan Johar sir wanted to make this film from a very long time. I had even heard the story from him a long time ago. He had narrated the story to me. I don’t know about the character names and all that. It could be a coincidence."

Shauna Singh Baldwin’s book’s story revolves around a wealthy Sikh landowner, Sardarji and his two wives Satya and Roop. Satya is his first wife and he eventually marries Roop whose father is deep in debt as Satya has failed to bear him any children. Interestingly, in Kalank both Sonakshi Sinha and Alia Bhatt are married to Aditya Roy Kapur and their character’s names are Satya and Roop respectively. The film is also based during India’s partition 1947 as the film.

Kalank is one of the most-anticipated films of the year. It has a stellar star cast that includes besides Varun, Alia Bhatt, Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditya Roy Kapur and Kunal Kemmu. The film is directed by Abhishek Varman and is scheduled to release on April 17.
