Gupt director Rajiv Rai to make a 'thrilling' comeback after 15 years; plans to turn the film into a franchise and not a sequel

Back in the 90s', thriller films in Bollywood surely gave young kids an adrenaline rush. When we recall this genre, the one film that remains a favourite till date is Gupt. Directed by Rajiv Rai, the film starred Bobby Deol, Kajol and Manisha Koirala in the lead roles, and the female murderer plot drove the film to success along with a spectacular music score by Viju Shah.

Reportedly, Rajiv is making a comeback in the industry after 15 long years with a franchise of Gupt. But, hold. The filmmaker told an entertainment portal that he 'won't mind' franchising Gupt only if he can come up with a script better than the first one!

For those who haven't watched the film, Kajol, the criminal or antagonist in the film, dies at the end, leaving no scope to extend the story any further.

Rajiv said he hasn't written a version of Gupt yet but has a concept in mind for years now. He also said he will make a franchise only if he has something new to offer as he doesn't want the audience to watch the same thing.

“I haven’t really written a version of Gupt but I have a concept that I might want to do in a few years from now. If I was to do Gupt 2 it won’t be a sequel as Kajol dies at the end and it ends happily. I wouldn’t mind franchising Gupt if the story I write is better than the first one with a completely different story," Rajiv told the portal.

"I might just use the title, the soul of the film and the names of the characters but the story and cast wise it will be a completely different film. The idea is to show the audience a brand new film as they get bored watching the same thing. I have to offer them something new every time. It’s something like the Bhatts have franchised the Murder series,” Rajiv added.

Apart from Gupt, Rajiv has given some memorable thrillers in the form of Mohra, Tridev, Vishwatma and many others.
