#MeToo: It's disappointing that not many actresses spoke up, says Tanushree Dutta

The #MeToo movement swept into Bollywood and beyond, following Tanushree Dutta recounting an unpleasant episode in September with veteran actor Nana Patekar on the sets of Horn 'OK' Pleassss in 2008 and the actress is of the opinion that the movement will cleanse the industry, she said during an interview with a leading daily.

"This is a spark that has ignited the consciousness of people. True, the initial burst is over, but now it will remain in people's minds and help cleanse the industry. The movement started with Bollywood and then, women, who never thought they would speak up, came forward,” Tanushree told the daily.

Tanushree, however, is upset about the fact that several actresses didn’t share their stories.

"People have been conditioned to think that it's okay for men to behave inappropriately and actresses have to compromise without complaining. Fortunately, the newer generation is opinionated and will phase out the patriarchal thinking. People have been dropped from projects, studios have become careful to not hire names that are accused. (Having said that,) it's disappointing that not many actresses have spoken up on the matter. They probably gave themselves over to their ambitions. Some stories of Swara (Bhasker) and Kangana's (Ranaut) struggles have been chronicled, but several others disappeared,” she added.

The #MeToo movement has brought out several dark truths from the world of Bollywood, with women naming and shaming the offenders. Celebrities like Vikas Bahl, Chetan Bhagat, Gursimran Khamba, Kailash Kher, Rajat Kapoor, Alok Nath, Anu Malik and Sajid Khan have been named and shamed for using their positions to exploit the vulnerable.
