Sujata Kumar, English Vinglish actress passes away after battling cancer

Actor Sujata Kumar, who played late veteran actor Sridevi’s sister in her comeback film English Vinglish died after battling stage four cancer. The news of Sujata’s death was confirmed by her sister, actor-singer Suchitra Krishnamoorthi. Suchitra took to Twitter to share the sad news today. Sujata was admitted in Mumbai’s Lilavati Hospital.

Suchitra has written quite a few posts on Twitter about grappling with her sister’s illness over the past few days. She asked her followers to pray for her sister but the inevitable happened and Sujata passed away to a better realm. She had written, “It feels like somebody's plunged a hard cold knife into my heart & ripped the ground from under my feet as i sit outside ICU & pray for my big sis my mother my best friend my darling Sujata Kumar as she battles for her life inside. Pls join me & my family in r prayers for her.”

In another tweet, Suchitra had informed that the mortal remains of Sujata would be cremated at the Juhu crematorium in Vile Parle on August 20. However, she deleted it later.

According to an entertainment portal, Sujata’s cancer had metastatised and she had multiple organ failure. Sujata was a cancer survivor and back in 2012, she was quoted as saying that she was very happy that Gauri Shinde thought of casting her in the film.

Sujata had worked in a few TV serials like Hotel Kingston on Star One and Bombay Talking on Zee Café. However, English Vinglish brought her fame and recognition. She later appeared in Anil Kapoor’s 24 as Meghna Singhania. She also worked in a few other Bollywood films like Karan Johar’s Gori Tere Pyar Mein, Aanand L Rai’s Raanjhanaa and Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish, both in 2013. She had also appeared in quite a few TV commercials.
