Gulab Jamun excited us as actors and as a couple: Aishwarya on reuniting with Abhishek

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan will soon be coming together in Anurag Kashyap’s Gulab Jamun. The real-life couple shared screen space eight years ago in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. Aishwarya who is looking forward to her upcoming release Fanney Khan opposite Anil Kapoor and Rajkummar Rao gave an interview to imminent journalist Rajeev Masand and spoke about what made her and Abhishek give their assent to Gulab Jamun.

During the candid interview Aishwarya spoke about coming together with husband Abhishek and said, “We mutually respect each other as actors and artists and since we have done so many films together we continue to recognize that of each other, that is primarily how we respond to a script and individually we were excited about the film Gulab Jamun.” She further said, “Also, since we were last seen in Mani Ratnam’s Guru and Raavan we had to take into account that we are a real-life couple who gets so much love from our fans and audiences and our past work would always be compared to our future ones.”

Aishwarya also revealed that she was offered Farah Khan’s Happy New Year opposite Shah Rukh Khan which also starred Abhishek but it was not the right film for her to take up as a wife. She said, “When I was offered Happy New Year, it was the perfect comeback after motherhood, a big star cast, assured box office success but I did not know how that would have rolled out since AB was already cast and individually I would have loved to do the film but in that dynamic it would have brought up a debate. So walking away as a professional and as an actor isn’t easy but as a wife you kind of narrow down on that decision. So when we got a beautiful script like Gulab Jamun which is a fabulous piece of work we gave our assent.”

On the work front, Aishwarya will be playing the role of a pop diva in Fanney Khan which is releasing tomorrow.
