When Aamir Khan apologized to Rani Mukerji for her voice being dubbed in Ghulam

Rani Mukerji gave a fabulous performance in her last film Hichki which had her essaying the role of a school teacher with Tourette Syndrome. The film received rave reviews for her performance and even got a standing ovation at Shanghai International Film Festival. In an interview published in a leading daily, Rani spoke about how her voice was thought to be different for Hindi films and hence, her voice was dubbed in some films. She also revealed what made Aamir Khan apologize to her.

During the course of the interview Rani was asked about her unique voice. Apparently, filmmakers used to dub over Rani’s voice in some of her films. Rani clarified that she dubbed herself for her initial films. She said, “For Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, I dubbed myself. In Ghulam, Aamir, Mukesh Bhatt and Vikram Bhatt felt that probably I didn't have the shrill, nice and beautiful voice that heroines used to in those days. Aamir had a conversation with me, he said, ‘You are a fan of Sridevi, and her voice was dubbed for so many of her films, so it's okay. We should do anything for the betterment of the film’.”

Rani had agreed to Aamir’s suggestion for the dubbing as it made sense and also being a newcomer she did not exactly have a choice. However, things changed for her when she signed Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Karan had asked Rani about someone else dubbing for her and enquired whether she had some issues with dubbing herself. Rani said, “Karan told me to dub for KKHH. Karan took that decision and that sort of changed everything for me. KKHH was such a popular film. Everyone saw it. There was acceptance for my voice.”

Rani revealed that Aamir apologized for asking her to let someone else dub for her when he heard her on screen. She said, “I remember Aamir calling me after watching KKHH, saying, "Babes I think we made a huge mistake by dubbing your voice. And your voice is really good." For me, that was a really amazing moment, since I respect him so much. The fact that he called and said that they had made a mistake was a big thing for me as a newcomer.”
