Ranbir Kapoor on commode scene in Sanju: It was hard for me to believe that this actually happened

The trailer of Rajkumar Hirani's Sanju left viewers spellbound. From Ranbir Kapoor's incredible transformation to Sanjay Dutt's controversial life, the three-minute video kept the audience hooked from start to finish. The makers clearly did not mince their words as they brand Dutt’s story ‘stranger than fiction’.

In one of the opening scenes, Sonam Kapoor, who plays one of Sanju's exes in the film, comes rushing into the toilet asking her husband, Sanjay Dutt, about her mangalsutra. In his drunken haze, since he obviously flushed it down the toilet, Ranbir as Sanjay, instead picks up the toilet seat cover and puts it around her neck.

During a recent media interaction, when asked about the same to the actor, Ranbir too expressed his disbelief over the unfolding of such events. He said, "We are not trying to portray Sanjay Dutt as a god. We are showing his mistakes. When you see me putting that commode on Sonam's neck, you find that character to be wrong. You're seeing the bad side of him and it actually happened. When I read the scene, I went to Sanjay Dutt's best friend and asked "Did this happen?" and he said, "Yeah. This girl came to my house after that with a commode on her neck. Sanjay Dutt was so deep into drugs at that time, he had no idea what he was doing.""

"And that's just one moment. There are probably like two thousand moments in this film where it was hard for me to believe that it has actually happened and how will I be able to perform it? So, yeah, emotionally it does disturb you when you do certain things like the jail sequences or when you really went deep into the drug but its also a lot of fun to play them because when you emotionally surrender to something there is a part of you which goes into your work," added Ranbir.

He further said, "This is always better than superficially working in a film like say Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, its easier. You go there have fun, cry on the surface, and that's important too. That's entertainment of a different kind but sometimes you get certain parts that emotionally tire you and take so much of you but that time you feel alive, you feel 'Okay, I am doing something good.' "

Written and directed by Rajkumar Hirani, the film will also star an ensemble cast in addition to Ranbir Kapoor, which includes Anushka Sharma, Paresh Rawal, Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza, Karishma Tanna, Manisha Koirala, Jim Sarbh, Vicky Kaushal and Boman Irani in pivotal roles.

Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films and Rajkumar Hirani Films in association with Fox Star Studios, Sanju is all set to be released on June 29, 2018.
