Earlier, talking about choosing the subject for the film, Kagti told a daily, "His (the assistant manager's) life has loosely inspired Akshay Kumar’s character who, in a bid to galvanise the players in Berlin, pulls out the flag of the Indian National Congress in the locker room during half-time. The flag was banned in Germany at the time but still inspired respect and all the players saluted it. That incident is a defining moment in the inception of my film".

She also talked about the film catering to the sense of patriotism today and said, "The feeling of national pride that was there in the ’30s and ’40s still exists. Through one person’s journey, the film showcases how several people contributed to the wins. India’s struggle for freedom which was on in full swing at the time plays out in the backdrop".

GOLD, also featuring Mouni Roy, Kunal Kapoor and Amit Sadh in pivotal roles, is this year's big Independence day release. It's slated to hit the screens on August 15.
