Sanjay Dutt Biopic: Rajkumar Hirani spills the beans on the Ranbir Kapoor movie

Ace director Rajkumar Hirani along with Ranbir Kapoor is gearing up for one of the most anticipated films of 2018 – the biopic on the famous ‘troubled’ star Sanjay Dutt, aptly titled Sanju. As the release date of the movie is steadily approaching the excitement surrounding the movie has visibly increased. The movie is being looked forward to as Sanjay Dutt’s life is full of ups and tremendous lows and a movie based on him will definitely be an interesting one, not to mention that it is being directed by Hirani and stars Ranbir as the lead.

In an interview with a leading daily, Hirani said that the anecdotes that Sanjay told him from his life had such an impact on the director that it stayed with him for a long time. He said that the actor’s life is a “goldmine” for any filmmaker. Hirani decided to make a film on the actor’s life after a series of interviews and bring to celluloid the story of a man who has learnt to get up and fight after every debacle. Right from the death of Sanjay’s mother just before his debut in Rocky to his stint in rehab and his conviction in the 1993 bomb blast case, everything will be covered in the biopic.

Hirani reiterated that he informed Dutt that he will not glorify him in the film and the Munnabhai MBBS actor was completely okay with that. Apparently, the makers had trouble naming the film as they wanted to go with a neutral title, and hence they embarked on Sanju (the name with which his mother Nargis used to call him). He said, “One of the titles was Aisa Hi Hoon. Anything you attach with a name in a biopic is like an adjective. Even if you say Aisa Hi Hoon or Sarphira, either you are glorifying him or attacking him. One thing all of us were clear about was that we wanted a neutral title. Dutt seemed a little harsh.”

Ranbir Kapoor who is playing the role of Sanjay in the movie shares no familial ties with him but uncannily looks like him if we go by the photos that were leaked from the set online. However, some might say that actors do have a fleeting resemblance in the shape of their eyes. However, Hirani maintains that Kapoor was cast for his acting ability as they needed someone who can be 21 years old (when Dutt made his debut) as well as 56 (when Dutt was released from jail).

Hirani has had an exceptional track record in Bollywood, most of his films have been blockbusters. He started off with Munnabhai MBBS which ironically was made with Sanjay Dutt in the lead. However, the filmmaker maintains that finishing the biopic and seeing it on the verge of release is a high. He praised Sanjay for his courage to showcase his troubled life to the audience through the movie. He revealed that the actor has seen the teaser and was overwhelmed and emotional about it but has said that he will watch the film only when it’s complete.

Other than Ranbir, manisha Koiral stars in the movie as Nargis and Dia Mirza plays the role of Manya (Sanjay’s wife). Sanju releases on June 29, 2018.
