“I must feel the desire to direct”: Abhay won’t take the plunge yet

There’s something about Abhay Deol… Driven, yet so casual it seems like he almost doesn’t care… But he does! In the two year interim since Happy Bhaag Jayegi, he has been focussing his energies on acting, producing, developing scripts and even setting up a distribution space. His Nanu Ki Jaanu is now up for release, while his bilingual American production The Field is into post-production, and his sci-fi flick JL-50 has a few days of work left.

For those who have been missing this talented though unassuming actor onscreen, the drought is set to end with the horror comedy Nanu Ki Jaanu. “It’s a pure entertainer, an extremely funny and family-friendly film which is sure to connect with a large audience,” he says.

Talk about the Happy… sequel and Abhay is honest enough to admit that he is not sure about whether his role is a complete one or a cameo. “I’m equally confused… the makers haven’t been in touch with me. If they came to me, I’d be happy to be a part of it.”
Incidentally, he features in a cameo in Aanand L Rai’s Zero as well. Rai has often mentioned that he needs to give Abhay a full-fledged role that would do full justice to his talent. That hasn’t happened yet, though…

He quips, “Ask Aanand. After hearing him say this for two years, I’ve told him to stop else I won’t take him seriously. That upset him a bit but I assured him that I will always love him with or without a great role.”

While he has, post Dev D, also developed another script he is not sure if he will take the plunge into direction. “Just because I understand the craft, can act and am involved in other aspects of filmmaking doesn’t mean that I can direct too. I must feel the desire to do so,” he points out. So, for now, he is content acquiring films and documentaries and trying to create an audience for them.

Not being in the limelight doesn’t mean a lack of enterprise!
