Good news for Anushka: Pari to be remade in Tamil

Doting husband Virat Kohli dubbed Anushka Sharma’s Pari, “her best work ever”.
However both critics and the box office were not as impressed by this supernatural thriller which had hit screens on March 2. The increasingly frightening teasers and the tagline – “Not a fairytale” – had raised expectations sky high. Unfortunately, the film failed to live up to its pre-release hype.

Anushka, to her credit, had been praised for her portrayal of a tormented Ruksana and her lookalike ghost Pari. She was commended for doing full justice to her role of substance.
However, many were also impressed by the film, which pushed the boundaries of the horror genre. For those who liked horror as a genre, and preferred a genuine theme over a series of scary sequences, the film was found to be fascinating as it wasn’t bound by the diktats of commercial cinema.

Now another sliver of good news for the film… Buzz has it that Pari will be remade in Tamil. According to sources, quality horror stories work in the Tamil film market and what’s more, the producers have loved the film. They have reportedly made a hefty offer to Anushka for the remake rights. The deal is in the process of being locked and an official confirmation is expected soon.

This is indeed good news for Anushka Sharma. Pari was her third home production, after road thriller NH10 and supernatural drama Phillauri. Pari, a hard-core horror flick, had seen her essay a bruised and battered avatar, as a woman possessed by an evil spirit.

Directed by Prosit Roy, it told the story of Arnab (Parambrata Chatterjee), who gives refuge to Rukhsana (Anushka Sharma), a mysterious woman found shackled in the woods, after her mother is killed in an accident involving his family. Rukhsana is hunted by a mob of men led by Dr Qasim Ali (Rajat Kapoor).

In an interview she had declared, “I have used my stardom to push the envelope… As an A-list actress, I want to emphasise on content and bring in elements that have not been tried before. If I succeed, then it will add value to it. It’s something that people are not getting into because many times people have this mentality that they need one person to start something and then everybody starts doing it. And I don’t mind being the person who tries new things.”

With Pari set to be remade in Tamil, she is getting into new territory already!
