Money Talk: How TZH, Mukkabaaz, 1921, Kaalakaandi fared at the box office

Vikram Bhatt’s 1921 leads the trio with a total Indian collection of Rs.8.07 crore. The day-wise collections went like this: Friday – Rs.1.56 crore, Saturday – Rs.2.09 crore, and Sunday – Rs.2.80 crore. This fourth instalment of his period horror franchise tells the tale of Ayush who arrives in England to learn music, and seeks the help of Rose (Zareen Khan), to exorcise the spirits who haunt his manor. The film creates the right mood visually even if it does not deliver too well on the chills and thrills.

Mukkabaaz collected Rs.82 lakh on Friday, Rs.1.51 crore on Saturday, Rs.1.71 crore on Sunday, and Rs.81 lakh on Monday. That brings its total India business to Rs.4.85 crore. Director Anurag Kashyap is in terrific form in this film, which is a sharp social commentary on the multiple battles that a common man, a sportsman, must face on a daily basis to fulfil his passion. From reverse casteism to the messed-up political scenario, Kashyap blasts many evils. Playing it bold and very effective, Mukkabaaz launches a scathing attack on the system and hypocrisies of our society – and it does it with additions of love and humour.

The Saif Ali Khan-starrer Kaalakaandi earned Rs.2.9 crore in three days. That is a tad underwhelming for a film that is engaging on many levels as it tells the happenings of one night in Mumbai, via three parallel tracks — a man who discovers he has terminal illness and decides to let go off his principles and live a little; a woman involved in a hit-and-run who seeks redemption, and two goons who must decide if they can trust each other.

Tiger Zinda Hai Week continued its reign at the box office. Its fourth week saw it achieve the following figures: Friday – Rs.1.46 crore, Saturday – Rs.2.12 crore, Sunday – Rs.3.27 crore, Monday – Rs.1.36 crore. That brings its total Indian business to a resounding Rs.327.07 crore. This Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif starrer has stood the test of time, also making it Salman’s highest grosser up until now. You’re still gonna hear it roaaaar!
