In the faceless virtual world where nasty is the norm, it is no surprise that women end up becoming the major target of hate and derision. The men, as usual, seem to have it considerably easier. No sooner did the images of Deepika Padukone partying with Sidharth Malhotra, Karan Johar and Manish Malhotra start doing the rounds of cyberspace, than the trolls got to work.
Predictably, the Padmavati beauty was the main target. Scores of comments poured in mocking her apparently droopy eyes. From "DP is drunkkk," to "Fully drunk Deepika," and “Drunk selfie”, it was only the lady who was singled out for this special attention. No mention of the men or their eyes, but for the odd-chap who asked, "What were you guys smoking." And even if she had been drinking, when did it become a crime? It’s not as if she took a selfie while driving under the influence, right?

It was meanness unlimited once again, when Anushka Sharma posted a picture of herself in cleanliness mode on a beach, with the caption, “Our country is our mother and to keep our country clean is our duty. Everyday we do things for ourselves, just a little bit of awareness and consciousness in keeping our surroundings clean will enable us to live in a healthy environment and we all know health is everything. Today I went on a cleanliness drive to Versova Beach with my friends and family and in reality, the pleasure I felt in cleaning the beach is indescribable.... In Mahatma Gandhi ji's words ... "An ounce of practice is worth more than tons of preaching" .... So please do your bit.”

No good deed goes unpunished and the nastiness was in full flow again. While most condemned her for cleaning the beach just so she could hog the spotlight and gain publicity, others merely wrote off the exercise as a good photo op. Even a maid cleans her house but doesn’t share pictures like these, one trolled, while still others asked if Anushka has ever cleaned her house after becoming an actress.
How about a drive to clean up the social media space? It could sure do with some cleaning up!
