Box Office: The Nun has a flying start; Paltan and Laila Majnu garner poor collections

Hollywood has once again won the race at the Indian box office as Friday’s release The Nun has steamrollered the other Hindi releases JP Dutta’s Paltan and Imtiaz Ali and Ekta Kapoor’s Laila Majnu. However, Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree is withstanding the opposition admirably.

The Nun has scored at the box office with collections of Rs 8 crore on day one. It achieved the best opening day numbers among all Conjuring films. It is easily the highest number for a Hollywood horror film and the second highest ever in India for a horror film after Raaz 3. The franchise has a good fan following in India and all the films have returned good numbers at the theatres.

On the other hand, Laila Majnu that star newcomers Avinash Tiwari and Tripti Dimri in the lead roles is set in the picturesque locales of Kashmir. The film directed by Sajid Ali and presented by Imtiaz has failed to light up the screen. Although the film received good reviews from the critics the film is going nowhere after grossing a very poor Rs 30 lakhs net. The film does not look as if it's going to pick up its socks anytime soon.

Meanwhile, JP Dutta’s war film Paltan has failed to live up to the director’s previous films such as Border, Ghulami etc. Paltan has grossed around Rs 1.15-1.25 crore nett on day one. This collection is in the same range as the blockbuster Border that starred Sunny Deol, Akshaye Khanna, Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Puneet Issar, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and others released way back in 1997 which grossed Rs 1.12 crore. However, at that time the film broke a lot of box office records but Paltan with no big names in its cast does not seem to be doing anything good at the box office.
