Bengali actress Payal Chakraborty commits suicide by hanging herself in a hotel room

Payal Chakraborty, a Bengali television actress committed suicide by hanging herself in a hotel room in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district, police said on Thursday. Payal, a resident of Kolkata, was found hanging from a ceiling fan of her room in a hotel in Siliguri. The body was recovered at around 5 p.m on Wednesday, a police officer said.

The hotel informed that there was no response from her room since Wednesday afternoon. "We had to break open the door of the hotel room which was locked from inside," a hotel staff said.

According to the police, preliminary investigation suggests the actress committed suicide.
The actress had checked into the hotel a day earlier. "It looks like a case of suicide, but the police are not ruling out other possibilities," said senior Siliguri police officer Gourab Lal.

"Chakraborty, after checking in, had categorically told the hotel officials that she did want to be disturbed in her room. She had locked the room from inside and did not order dinner," said Mr. Deb.

The actor's family members arrived in Siliguri today and said they didn't know why she was in this town. "Payal told us she would be going to Ranchi. I am not sure what was she doing in Siliguri," her father Prabir Guha told reporters.

The 38-year-old actress was an up and coming actor and had been seen in a number of television serials, web series and films. She starred in shows like Chokher Tara Tui and Goenda Ginni. She had recently moved to films.
