Birthday Special: From India’s opulent 'wedding brand' to overseas hot property, the man, the myth, the legend- Sabyasachi Mukherjee!

The man, the myth, the legend and of course the nation’s one of the most sought-after designers, Sabyasachi Mukherjee turns 49 today. While many people settle for a niche or path, it won’t be wrong to say that he went out of the way and carved a whole new brand for himself. Coming from humble beginnings, Sabya waited tables in Goa before starting his eponymous label and turning into a top-notch couturier. Apart from being a celebrity favourite, this 'Indian at heart, global at scale’ designer has been a hit amongst the common masses as every second girl aspires to be a ‘Sabyasachi bride’

Needless to say, every year is Sabya’s year on the professional front as it seems like the designer has miles to go before he sleeps. So on the occasion of his birthday, allow us to remind you once again what makes this rooted, Indian designer a brand in himself!

SOUGHT AFTER COUTURIER, YEAR AFTER YEAR

Being synonymous with the word wedding, both celebrity and non-celeb brides seek Sabya and his bridal creation as seen on his ever-busy ‘Brides of Sabyasachi’ Instagram account. Putting his heart and soul into his work, the ace designer, curated some rooted, cultural looks keeping his clientele in mind. And for those who cannot afford him, settle for the ripped-off copies available almost everywhere.

With imitation being the best form of flattery, he is more than happy being one of the plagiarized designers in the country. “I get very excited about the prospect of my clothing being copied. I would be very disappointed if my clothes didn’t get replicated because somewhere down the line, you are creating a very big trend in the economy and you can’t do it alone,” reported Vogue. Word.

THE OVERSEAS-INDIAN HOT PROPERTY

Not a long time ago in October 2022, Sabya said ‘Namaste New York’ with his eponymous flagship store on Christopher Street and the rest is history! Though his clothing jewels and accessories have been sold in stores like Bergdorf Goodman, Browns, and Selfridges, this is his first outlet in international seas. Post his unsuccessful attempt in 2007, the designer made a comeback and how!

“I hate failing. It was the right place at the wrong time,” he said of an early foray into the American market in 2007, as reported by Diet Prada. “So I said ‘fine, I’ll go back,’ and when I come back to America on my own terms, I will.” What followed has been a sort of fairy tale rise that most fashion designers can only dream of. Onwards and upwards!

FASHION WORLD'S ONE-STOP-DESTINATION

Apart from his regular new launches and heritage bridal collections, the designer has expanded his horizon and branched out his label into heritage jewellery and accessories consisting of the regal clutches, the nani bucket bags, immaculate jewels and the royal Bengal mangalsutras.

Is the makeup line on its way too? Well not for now, but only time can tell!

THE MAN WITH A MIDAS TOUCH

Be it the one with H&M or Starbucks, Sabyasachi collaborations have everyone in a chokehold! With sold outs being almost a regular norm, one can say he is indeed a man with a Midas Touch!

Happy birthday, Sabyasachi. Keep adding to your legacy, one achievement at a time!
