Vivek Oberoi’s PM Narendra Modi biopic’s release banned by Election Commission till end of Lok Sabha Elections 2019

Vivek Oberoi starrer PM Narendra Modi biopic is facing fresh trouble as its release has been stopped by Election Commission. The film is based on the life of the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hence, the film that is scheduled to release tomorrow, coinciding with the start of Lok Sabha polls has been stopped by the Election Commission till the end of the elections. The official body said that any material which disturbs level-playing field should not be displayed.

The commission said that any such "biopic material in the nature of biography/hagiography sub-serving the purposes of any political entity or individual connected to it, which is intended to, or which has the potential to disturb the level playing field during the elections, should not be displayed in the electronic media including cinematograph during the operation of MCC". It also said that any complaints on the matter will be examined by a panel of retired High Court and Supreme Court judges.

There have been several petitions against the film by the opposition parties. However, yesterday, the Supreme Court had dismissed a petition by a Congress leader stating, “too much of court time is wasted on these non-issues". However, it also said that the final call should be taken by Election Commission as they are the best judges to decide whether the film tilts the balance in favour of BJP or not. The Congress had alleged that the release of the film so close to the General Elections is a political gimmick and is a violation of model code of conduct.
